System Architecture
System Architecture
The system architecture is shown above. It’s also available at: https://www.reverity.io/architecture. PLC Shift Manager runs on Windows and connects to application runtimes. Application runtimes execute on Linux computers.
Tag data is read from and written to the PLC using industrial protocols.
-
EtherNET/IP is used to communicate with Rockwell Automation Logix PLCs.
-
Modbus is used to communicate with other PLCs.
-
OPC-UA is used to communicate with CODESYS soft PLCs.
-
A custom protocol is used to communicate with Schneider Electric SCADAPack 47xi devices.
Tag values are synchronized with the PLC once per second.
The PLC is responsible for safety and communicates with the hard IO. The PLC can also be connected to SCADA, local HMI, and other systems, or MQTT and Sparkplug B can be used to connect applications to other systems directly, which means that only some tags need to be mapped to the PLC. PLC Shift extends the functionality of existing automation, it does not replace it.
